Are You a Cat Owner or a Cat Parent? Why Language Matters

Mar 19, 2025

When you think about your relationship with your cat, how do you define it? Are you a cat owner, or a cat parent / guardian? The way we describe our roles with our pets isn’t just semantics: it can influence how we connect with them and care for them. Whether you call yourself a cat owner, or a cat parent / cat guardian, the words we use can shape the way we perceive and interact with our cats. Let’s explore what these terms mean and how they influence our bonds with our beloved cats.

More Than Just Food and Shelter

Caring for a cat isn’t just about providing food, water, and a warm place to sleep. Our relationships with animals go beyond the basics: they involve emotional connection, trust, and mutual understanding. Thinking of yourself as a guardian or parent, rather than just an owner, may shift the way you approach your cats' care, prioritizing their emotional and physical well-being.

The Power of Language in Pet Care

Words matter. Referring to yourself as a “cat owner” implies possession, while “cat parent” or “cat guardian” suggests a more nurturing and reciprocal relationship. This distinction is important because it reflects our attitudes toward animals and our responsibility to them.

In a recent conversation, I had the pleasure of speaking with Shannon Cutts, a professional animal intuitive, Reiki Master, and teacher in animal communication. Shannon has dedicated her career to helping people understand and deepen their bonds with their pets. According to her, adopting a mindful perspective on our roles with our pets can lead to a more fulfilling and enriched relationship.

How to Deepen Your Connection with Your Cat

  1. Observe Their Behaviour – Pay attention to your cats' body language, vocalizations, and habits to understand their needs better.
  2. Engage in Meaningful Interaction – Play, talk, and spend quality time with your cats in ways that nurture trust and companionship.
  3. Respect Their Individuality – Every cat has a unique personality. Some are more independent, while others crave affection and human touch: honour their preferences.
  4. Explore Holistic Care – Consider alternative wellness practices such as Reiki, gentle massage, or aromatherapy to support their overall well-being.

Whether you see yourself as a cat owner, or a cat parent / guardian, what matters most is the love and respect you offer your cats. By being intentional with our language and our actions, we can cultivate a deeper, more meaningful relationship with our kitties.
